Main Conference

It is our great pleasure to invite abstract submissions for the joint CiCea/CitizED conference Young People’s Citizenship and Education: Building Collaborations in Communities that will be held at the University of York, England, Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th May 2020. The conference is organised by two of the leading organisations promoting the teaching and research of Citizenship Education in Europe and the rest of the world.

The principal conference theme will explore young people’s citizenship and citizenship education within the context of collaborative communities. We welcome papers examining how and in what ways citizenship education can encourage young people to relate to, engage with, and participate in their communities. We would also encourage contributions which seek to analyse how citizenship education and educators develop community-based youth identities and forms of active citizenship.

We are also keen to receive papers focusing on all other aspects of citizenship education from around the world exploring curriculum design, pedagogy, youth identities, history education, and policy-making. The conference is supported by the journal Citizenship Teaching and Learning. Conference papers of good quality will be referred to the journal for consideration for publication.

As with previous CiCea and CitizED conferences, our intention is to host an international conference with insights and perspectives from around the world. We welcome individuals and groups (academic associations, professional bodies, charities, NGOs etc.) that represent a wide range of commitment to youth activism, engagement and education.

The Conference has as its’ on the ground local chair and scientific committee member, Dr. Andrew Peterson from the CitizED Society will coordinate the local conference organization at the University of York, in York United Kingdom. Keep an eye on this space for updates!

We invite you to submit abstracts for research papers, posters, symposium, and workshops that relate to this year's conference theme: "Young people’s citizenship and education: Building collaborations in communities".  Once again, we will also be offering interested presenters who would like to participate, but cannot physically be present, the opportunity to do a 'virtual paper'.  Research students, local NGO representatives, education and policy stalk-holders are also welcome to take the opportunity to apply and participate in the conference. All accepted and actualized papers, symposium, workshops, virtual papers and posters are eligible for review for inclusion in the Conference General Proceedings and the Conference Selected Papers.

If you wish to be considered for 2020 Conference, please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words via the CiCea proposal link [see below] on or before Saturday 13th December 2019. This conference accepts papers in English only.

Proposals for the Main Conference

Proposals are invited on the conference themes. We welcome proposals for papers, posters, symposia and workshops.

Papers

are presented as a standard presentation, for which you will have 20 minutes to present and answer questions. There is only limited space available for presentations and the Conference Scientific Committee will decide on the presentation format. All papers are eligible for inclusion in the Conference’s Selected Papers publication. Papers for publication are selected by the Conference Scientific Committee.

Symposia

will group at least three linked papers, presented by a group together. The same rules apply as for papers (4,000 words etc), but you will provide your own chairperson and your time will be limited to one conference session. Therefore, if there are many papers in a symposium then each paper will have less than 20 minutes. Symposium papers are normally presented grouped together in the Selected Papers.

Workshops

are interactive sessions lasting 60-90 minutes, in which participants are doing more than answering questions! You will normally need to limit the maximum number of people who might be able to participate. You may wish to provide a written account of your workshop for the Selected Papers publication, in the form of an article of 4,000 words (maximum).

Poster

proposals afford an opportunity to mount a standard poster (A1 size), explaining some research, projects or practices You will have the opportunity to stand by your poster and discuss it with members of the conference during a scheduled poster session. A paper based on the poster is eligible for publication in the Selected Papers.

Virtual Paper

allow those unable to attend the conference to submit a paper which will be presented at the conference in virtual format.

How to send your proposal

Proposals MUST be submitted via the CiCea Conference 2020 Proposal Link.

We cannot accept proposals that are submitted by any other means.

When making a proposal, we recommend that you read our How to make a Proposal Guidance notes.

Applicants wishing to submit more than one proposal must submit separate applications for each proposal. Furthermore, although they will be evaluated jointly, symposium proposals must be submitted as three separate proposals (one for each component presentation).
