The 22nd Annual CiCea / 16th Annual CitizED Annual and 3rd joint CiCea/CitizED Conference

It is with regret that we have decided not to go ahead with CiCea/CitizED Conference planned for May in the face of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and its implications for all travel and events. Apologies for not writing to you sooner but, as we are sure you all appreciate, we are faced with a very dynamic and ever-changing situation. We wanted to be clear about how we can proceed, and this required us to wait for guidance from the UK government.

The contribution of academics and educators to understanding citizenship takes on a renewed importance in times of a major health crisis that has such a dramatic impact on our relationships and identities. Our Association remains committed to sustaining our academic community in these challenging times. As such we have agreed that we will:

  • Proceed with a peer-reviewed publication of full conference papers submitted by participants who had their abstracts accepted. We would also encourage and support colleagues looking to publish in the Association’s journal (Citizenship Teaching and Learning and its occasional peer-reviewed working papers series. We would like to encourage all participants to get in touch for further information.
  • Organise a workshop in the autumn to address citizenship in times of pandemic. Depending on the situation this may need to be a fully virtual event but we are exploring other face-to-face opportunities in Europe. Please let us have your ideas and suggestions. We will be in touch with further details before 25 June 2020.
  • Continue to plan with CitizED for an Annual Conference in May 2021.

We understand that a number of you have paid for the May conference either in full or in part. We will of course be offering a full refund to all colleagues. Please get in touch at CiCea Administration with details of your payment (bank transfer or PayPal. Alternatively, we can hold the funds for you and they can then be used for the autumn workshop, the 2021 conference or for CiCea membership 2021-23 (see our website for details

On behalf of both CiCea and citizED we thank you for your understanding and continued participation - we hope to see you soon either online or in person! In the meantime, please take care and stay well.

Beata Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz                                  Andrew Peterson,

  CiCea President                                            citizED

CiCea is the Association focusing on citizenship education and identity formation in young people in Europe and the world. It is a dynamic and fast-expanding group of academics from across Europe, all engaged in research and scholarship on young people's social learning and their construction of identities.

We've formed this Association after many of us have worked together on a European Commission Erasmus Academic Network project, 'Children's Identity and Citizenship in Europe (CiCe)' since 1998.  This project had only Higher Education institution members. While having started out as an Erasmus project, it later became a Jean Monnet Network project.  It also had its own Website.

Our Association has individual and institutional members, and an elected, independent Executive and Board of Directors.

Beata Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz, of the University of Warmia and Mazury, Poland is President of the CiCe Association as of October 1st, 2018.

Andrew Mycock, of the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom is the President-Elect as of October 1st 2018.

Despina Karakatsani, of the University of the Peloponnese, is Immediate Past-President as of October 1st 2018.
